Dr. Bishop and Staff

John E. Bishop, M.D. is a native Texan and a Board Certified Ophthalmologist who has practiced in Corpus Christi since 1985. His practice specializes in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus (crooked eye) surgery. Dr. Bishop's goal is not to be the busiest eye surgeon in Corpus Christi, but to have the best success rate and the happiest patients. His surgical patients have included physicians, attorneys and members of his staff. Dr. Bishop practices in Corpus Christi full-time so that he can honor his commitment to be available for patients before, during and after surgery.

Dr. Bishop is a Phi Beta Kappa alumnus of the University of Texas at Austin. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio, where he also served an internship in Internal Medicine. He next completed a three-year residency in Ophthalmology at the Hermann Eye Center and University of Texas Department of Ophthalmology in Houston. He spent one year in fellowship studies specializing in strabismus surgery at the George Washington University and Children's Hospital National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1985, Dr. Bishop has served for many years as an associate examiner for the Board, administering oral examinations to candidates for Board Certification. He is an Assistant Professor at both the University of Texas Medical Branch and Texas A & M University School of Medicine and has authored numerous scientific articles in ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and is a fellow of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Bishop has held numerous leadership positions for local hospital staffs and medical organizations, including Chief of Staff at Driscoll Children's Hospital, Presidency of the Corpus Christi Ophthalmological Society, and Vice-presidency of the Texas Association for Pediatric Opthalmology and Strabismus.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Bishop is a devoted family man. He, his wife and three children are longtime active members of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. His hobbies include photography, fishing and astronomy.
